HISTORY

Childhood

As the second son of the leader of the Qinghe Nie Sect, Nie Huaisang's life started out as one of carefree privilege. This changed when a rival clan engineered the suspicious death of his father when he was still a child, resulting in him being raised by his teenage brother, Nie Mingjue, instead. His brother's dominant personality and strict upbringing leading Nie Huaisang to become a timid, anxious boy with low self-confidence and dependency traits.

Education

Nie Huaisang's struggles with cultivation colored his adolescence with failure, Unable to meet the standards set forth for him by others, he gave up, accepting his own lack of talent as reason enough to pursue other interests. Rather than dedicate himself to subjects he had little interest, he applied his intelligence to his own interests. He discovered a talent for painting, calligraphy, and go and indulged in his hobbies. He turned to subterfuge and manipulation as methods of avoiding trouble in his life.

Taken Hostage

At eighteen, Nie Huaisang and his peers were taken as political hostages by a powerful sect seeking to expand its rule. They were disarmed and forced to hunt a monster beyond their level of ability. A rebellion broke out against their captors who left them for dead. Aware of his own limitations, Nie Huaisang hid himself until the chaos subsided and relied on his peers for survival.

Rising Tensions and the Death of Nie Mingjue

Nie Mingjue's strict oversight escalated into bullying. Demeaning comments about his passions and general worth became a regular occurence. It culminated in his brother destroying his art collection and threatening to do it again in the future. Nie Huaisang snapped and rebelled, kicking off months of quarrelling that lasted up until Nie Mingjue's death. The brothers never reconciled, leaving him grief-stricken, guilt-ridden, and regretful.

Betrayal and the cost of revenge

Nie Huaisang discovered his brother's remains missing from their tomb, triggering an extensive search for them. Eventually, he found only an arm resonating with negative energy that implied Nie Mingjjue had been murdered. Narrowing down suspects led him to pinpoint his trusted friend, Jin Guangyao, as the culprit which left him devastated, unable to trust anyone, and obsessed with revenge, He vowed to avenge Nie Mingjue and unmask his former friend no matter the cost, his scheme consuming his whole life before leaving him friendless and alone after reaching his goal. The whole ordeal of masquerading as a fool to avoid detection has left him emotionally disconnected and unsure where to go from here.

ABILITIES

Cultivation Mystical disciplines that involve martial arts training and harnessing universal life energy to gain supernatural abilities like prolonged youth, extended lifespan, enhanced physical ability, sword surfing, etc.. The Qinghe Nie Sect uses a specific type that involves slaying animals to strengthen the spirits in their sword and gain more power for themselves. Nie Huaisang is considered a weak cultivator compared to others but he has a golden core and he's powerful enough to maintain a youthful appearance into his thirties. While his abilities don't compare to his peers, they're better than those of an ordinary human.

Daoist Magic Mystical spells utilizing magic circles and paper talismans to produce various effects. Usually drawn with in ink on fabric, paper, or skin. Talismans tend to burn up after once use and need to be remade. They have the ability to ignite fires, produce light, pin opponents down under spirits, and repel spirits. Magic circles are similar but produce effects on a larger scale. Nie Huaisang's main trick is something called a maze array which causes any who wander into its field of effect to become disoriented and lost until they find their way out. He's better at magic than he is fighting but ultimately, his skills are nothing to write home about.

MONSTER

appearance

In monster form, Nie Huaisang appears as a tall, pointy-eared male humanoid resembling a blend of animalistic fae and vampire. Two jade-like horns curve upward from the crown of his head and large, black, feathered wings with an iridescent green shmmer jut outward from his shoulder blades. His fingers become long and spidery, the nails elongating into bird-like talons and his hair extends past his knees. His eyes become a light, vibrant green and his skin turns eerily pale and takes on a glow as if perpetually bathed in moonlight. While his transformation is fairly mild, Nie Huaisang's lack of pain tolerance renders it as excruciating , with the sprouting of wings and growth of talons being a particularly painful and bloody experience.

Fae Abilities

Glamour | In fae form, Nie Huaisang can cast an illusion of physical perfection, whatever that may be for his target. (Think Catherine from Catherine for Xbox 360.) He's beguiling, beautiful, and trustworthy, making disliking or disagreeing with him feel unnatural to the target, as compelling others to see him as helpless and make them want to help. These thoughts and feelings will feel completely natural to the targets. If the target is particularly strong-willed, the effects will be lesser, clouding their reason in a cloying way and making them more suggestible and susceptible to him. Once the glamour is broken, the target will feel confused and disoriented, as if waking up from an intense dream or hangover.
Disguise | As a fae, Nie Huaisang is able to alter his form to mimic the forms of specific animals. He does not shapeshift, just projects telepathic illusions of these creatures into minds to mask his true form. This list includes birds such as crows, orioles, and doves as well as small animals such as mice, squirrels, prairie dogs, and rabbits.
Illusion | Nie Huaisang has the ability to cast layered illusions over his surrounding environment, adding or subtracting sensory information at will. (Think Mastermind from X-men.) As with his illusive shapeshifting, physical reality does not change, only the target's perceptions of it. He can use this ability to hide his presence from other, mask features of his environment such as projecting images of bridges over cliffs or holes onto solid ground to trick and lure his targets into traps.

While his form can easily be considered as possessing a kind of fragile, ethereal beauty, appearances are deceiving. He's both predator and prey, relying on cold cunning and amoral decision making to act as judge, jury, and executioner to those who cross him. As his hunger increases, so does his capacity for cruelty and psychological torture. Rather than his trickery serving a specific agenda, his fae form does it out of sadistic pleasure or for his own entertainment, even if the recipients of his attentions die in the process.
