Ordinarily, Huaisang's a pretty alert individual, noticing routines, patterns, and details that others might miss at first.

Couple that with sexual frustration and very new, confusing but intense feelings he's trying to sort out and he's a pot ready to boil over.

With surprising dignity for the usually anxious boy, Huaisang simply covers up Jiang Cheng then pulls his own robe onto his lap.

"What do you want, Lan-xiong? Can't you see we're busy?"

The questions are quiet but not timid, simmering with barely suppressed belligerence and resentment in that way only sullen teenagers can perfectly master.

The red flush stays affixed to Lan Wangji's ears as he keeps his glare trained on Nie Huaisang.

Just because he knows does not mean he condones. Just because he understands does not mean he condones. His own behavior was as inappropriate as theirs.

Lan Wangji did not want to let such thoughts return to distract him again. For all his anger at these two, it's also directed at himself. He's bothered by it again. It reminds him of his own lacking self-discipline.

"This behavior is unacceptable. Cease, and do not repeat it!"

Huaisang covering him at least gives him a moment to compose himself, or try to but his mind is slower to recover, to reach for reality aside from the shock of someone interrupting what had been everything he hadn't known he wanted.

"...A-Sang." It's quiet, his hand reaching to find the other teenager's, Jiang Cheng,s gaze darting to Wangji.

"...We..." He clears his throat, gaze drifting to Wangji for a moment before he just goes quiet again, shame bringing a flush to his skin.

"It's going to be all right," Huaisang says in a rush, ignoring Wangji for the moment, gripping Jiang Cheng's hand with unusual firmness. "I'll make it all right. Somehow."

The Nie Sect is full of warriors, well-known for strong and violent nature. And despite his disinterest in cultivation and saber practice, Huaisang, too, is a fighter, one who battles with his wits, not a blade. His mind works quickly, trying to hold down the rising fury in him at that shameful blush. But he knows that threatening to reveal his own wrongdoing will backfire. Huaisang and Jiang Cheng were both there watching when Wei Wuxian's gambit to deflect punishment onto Lan Wangji fail, resulting in a beating for both of them.

"Lan-xiong," he begins quietly with forced civility. "...I apologize. I... I let my emotions get the better of me. I seduced Jiang Cheng. If someone here must be punished, let it be me."

What is this? Nie Huaisang offering himself up for disciplinary action? The coward who whines and complains after half an hour of most strenuous activities? Then again, it's not the first time, he's offered to do something for someone else, seemingly free of charge...

It is not the sort of plea that will work. Lan Wangji's fists shake for a moment, and he has to pause and refocus in order to still them.

Being seduced is not an excuse. Just because one was not the instigator does not remove their responsibility for participating in the situation.

It's still shameful.

It's still a mistake.

"Both shall be punished. Dress."

He isn't sure if he will turn the two of them over right away, but he knows that they need to at least clothe themselves.

He's still for a long moment, lying there under the robe before he moves to sit up slowly, his fingers flexing and unconsciously reaching for Huaisang's.

For reassurance. This is....something he'd never want to be found out and he knows if they're going to be punished, word will get around.

And back to his family.

"...I.."

Huaisang knows. He can read Jiang Cheng like a book now. He feels his control slipping so he squeezes the other teen's fingers. Taking the fall hadn't worked but there has to be something else that will. For now though, Huaisang reaches for his robe.

"Just... Just get dressed for now, A-Cheng. We'll figure this out."

As he speaks, he reaches up and lays his hand tenderly on Jiang Cheng's cheek, leaning toward to rest his forehead against the other teen's.

"...But I wish Wei-xiong were here. He's a better talker than me."

With the damage already done, Huaisang kisses Jiang Cheng's mouth softly then stands up to get dressed.

At the mention of Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji's jaw gives an almost imperceptible twitch. He watches the displays of affection with a continued glare, though to one who could read it, there's much more than simple anger beneath the surface.

It's the kiss that finally has him snapping again.

"Impudence."

There was likely no question that he would walk out and leave them to dress themselves without being observed, but as if to make certain it's clear, Lan Wangji takes a step into the room and closes the door behind him without moving his gaze from the two.

He leans into the touch, his fingers curling around Huaisang's wrist briefly and when the kiss comes, he returns it, even if it's brief.

Then he moves to cleaning himself off with the sheet before starting to dress, pulling on his pants and first layer of robes, gaze darting to Huaisang as he does so.

Impudence.

A side effect of friendship with Wei Wuxian, to be certain. When Huaisang had first arrived here, he'd been meek, easily discouraged, and cautious to the point of cowardice. Meeting and getting to know someone special has a way of changing people, inspiring them in a ways they never knew they needed. His crush on his friend may have faded but Huaisang still admires Wei Wuxian and looks to his lessons for guidance, even after he's gone.

What would Wei Wuxian do this situation? Talk.

So Huaisang strikes up a casual conversation with Jiang Cheng as he gets dressed, ignoring the supervisor blocking the door for the moment.

"Have you received any letters from Wei-xiong recently, A-Cheng? He sent me a painting he just finished not too long ago. i think he's bored without us to help keep him entertained."

Huaisang chuckles as if to lighten the tension in room. He rests his hand on Jiang Cheng's shoulder a moment.

Again Nie Huaisang speaks of Wei Wuxian. Again he drives home the point that Lan Wangji as well became caught up in such a shameful act.

It is all improper. A distraction from cultivation. If these two are here to learn from the Lan Sect, they must follow the rules. Lan Wangji must also follow the rules. Much to his own disgust, he has become too familiar with what can happen if one allows themselves too much indulgence.

His nails dig into his palms as he clenches his fists almost tight enough to cause bleeding.

"Silence. Do not touch. Dress."

Huaisang may have spent too much time with Wei Wuxian before he'd left but at the moment, it was something to focus on that didn't involve the feeling of wanting to sink into the floor as he dressed. "He..um..doesn't really write me much.I think he knows you'll be more receptive to his rambling. But it doesn't surprise me."

His fingers fumble for a moment at the touch, breath catching as his eyes meet Huaisang's.

"...I.." He takes a breath. "What else did he say?"

Huaisang hesitates before answering, looking to Lan Wangji for a long moment. As merciless as his temper can be, he's not an unkind person. He's not someone who delights in unnecessary cruelty toward others or takes sadistic pleasure in their suffering unless he's been given specific reason to. He's been told not to speak and truth be told, he doesn't really know Lan Wangji all that well just from what he's observed of the other boy and everything Wei Wuxian has told him about him.

Jiang Cheng needs the distraction right now so he continues to speak quietly as he pulls on his robe, further impudence but necessary he thinks.

"Oh, it was just the usual. 'Lan Zhan, this, Lan Zhan, that...' You know how he gets. He's been wanting to know about him, how he's doing, what he's been up to... If he's seeing any girls... You know, that type of thing."

Of course, Wei Wuxian's letters hold a lot more than just that, too, but that's all Huaisang's willing to disclose right now. He finishes getting dressed and waits for Jiang Cheng to do the same. Then he simply takes the other boy's hand and holds it.

No matter what happens now, they're in it together. Jiang Cheng won't have to deal with the fallout of this alone.
