Character Information

Name: Nie Huaisang
Canon: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Mostly novel with a couple of non-contradictory details from the live action adaptation on his skills.)
Canon Point: Chapter 50
Age: 23 (Estimated)
History: Wiki History (cw: death, murder, animal cruelty)
Personality: Intelligent - Huaisang is incredibly smart and cunning, despite his poor performance as student growing up. He's quickwitted, innovative, and skilled at solving puzzles, even under pressure, and possesses intense mental focus which he can apply to specific goals or tasks for great lengths of time. He's very calculating and efficient in his thinking to the point of coming across as cold or ruthless at times. This is exhibited in his ten year long metaphorical chess match against Jin Guangyao in which he endangered friends and innocents alike in pursuit of justice for his murdered brother. Generally speaking, Huaisang tends to apply his intelligence to subjects that interest him such as art, astronomy, and literature or in pursuit of personal goals such as revenge or clever leadership of his sect. Due to his intellect, Huaisang is capable of coming up with highly elaborate and long lasting schemes when sufficiently motivated to do so as well as execute them with patience and discretion, ensuring that very little to no evidence leads back to him.

Unethical - Moral lines shift and blur for Huaisang. During his days as a student at the Cloud Recesses, he doesn't think twice about asking a classmate to help him cheat on an exam and assists that same classmate with his own efforts to cheat punishments he's giving. He also encourages and enables this classmate to subvert and break the rules they're supposed to follow. He opts out of an outing with friends to go study, not because he actually intends to put effort into his schoolwork but because doing so might get a family friend to put in a good word with his older brother if he does. He has an ongoing pattern of deceptive behavior; in pursuit of his brother's killer, he adopts a public persona of incompetence and unreliability in order to fool everyone to offering him assistance, including people who were once close to him. He lies to a close family friend to trick him into killing his enemy for him as well as repeatedly and recklessly endangers innocents, including children, and generally treats human lives as his personal pawns to use in his feud with Jin Guangyao. He offers bribes to get others to get them to do the things he wants and he's willing to kill animals in gruesome fashion in order to send a message to others if he believes it necessary. Basically, Huaisang is a man who believes that the end justifies the means and his actions are acceptable as long he isn't caught and takes great effort to hide his shadier activities. He's not above blackmail or destroying evidence if it suits him nor is he unwilling to look the other way from shady acts committed by others if it benefits him to do so.

Loyal - Huaisang is deeply devoted to his loved ones, most notably his older brother, Nie Mingjue, and the Qinghe Sect. For most of his early life, he is portrayed as flighty and irresponsible, unwilling to sacrifice the idle life he lived as dandy in pursuit of his hobbies. Nie Mingjue was known for being harsh and demanding in his instruction of his sensitive younger brother but despite this fact, the brothers had a very strong bond between them. This becomes most apparent after Mingjue is murdered and Huaisang becomes the next sect leader. Huaisang sacrifices his freedom, his dreams, his reputation, and his friendships in order to expose, ruin, and eliminate his brother's killer out of a sense of filial duty. This loyalty also extends to his ancestors. Despite having personal misgivings about the way his sect cultivates, Huaisang chooses to honor his ancestors rather than use his position as leader to try to forge a new path for his sect. It takes time and effort to gain Huaisang's loyalty but once it's accomplished, there are no lines he won't cross for that person's sake, even if he risks himself in the process.

Timid - For the heir of a powerful martial sect, Huaisang comes across as pretty meek and soft. He avoids direct confrontations and can be easily intimidated by harsher, stricter, and more forceful personalities. While he's a capable enough leader if given a chance to prove himself, he tends to be more comfortable following others or lurking in the shadows than placing himself in any sort of limelight. He's more likely to flee than fight given the option and despite his martial arts training, has a tendency to freeze or hesitate during violent altercations. He's more inlined to run away and hide from danger than face it head on, even if it means using someone bigger and stronger than him as a shield. Huaisang lacks self-assurance to the point of being self-deprecating and pessimistic about his capabilities. In his teenage years as the Cloud Recesses, there's a sense that he lived vicariously through the exploits of the much bolder Wei Wuxian, latching onto him as a follower and enabler because he lacked the courage to directly engage in antics himself. Much of his stubborn reluctance to inherit his sect's leadership stems from his self-doubt and belief that he'll fail in the position. Huaisang fears responsibilty so he avoids it whenever he can, choosing instead of live on as the idle second son and pretend he's not his brother's heir, which is a point of contention between him and Nie Mingjue. It's worth noting that once Huaisang is actually in a position of responsibility, he handles it very well considering that his sect continues to follow him despite his reputation as the Headshaker, a sect leader who is notorious for being an anxious, unreliable mess. It's important to note, however, that Huaisang often exaggerates his own anxious in order to manipulate people around him into doing what he wants.

Artistic - Huaisang's a very creative and expressive person, most often displaying these traits through his keen interest in poetry and art. He paints, composes poetry, and collects precious antiques. He also collects pet birds, most of which he's hunted and caught personally. Huaisang finds value and beauty in many things, particularly nature and different creative works. He's also pretty fashionable, though not particularly vain about his looks, as a means of expressing himself. He puts a lot of care into his appearance through handpainted paper fans that he creates himself. A point of contention between Huaisang and his brother is his dedication to calligraphy and art over practicing his saber or gaining the respect of his sect. Due to his emotional sensitivity and Mingjue's rather brusque treatment of him, Huaisang's developed a habit of expressing himself through his artwork and poetry as a means of catharsis though he's clever enough to use his knowledge of artistic symbolism to convey hidden messages for others through his art.

Spoiled - Due to his sheltered upbringing, Huaisang's used to living an easy, protected life. Unlike many peers from his generation, he was shielded from the horrors of war and as a result, he hasn't matured all that much from when he was fifteen. He's somewhat greedy, as displayed by his rather extensive art collection and tendency fo focus on gifts more than the gift giver at times. He's used to getting his way with Nie Mingjue and it shows in the way he talks back to his older brother and whimsically waltzes out of saber practice despite being told to stay. Huaisang's pretty childish, more interested in having an easy, pleasant life than accepting his responsibilities. He can be really melodramatic and stubborn when his emotions cloud his reason such as when he blows up at his older brother and locks himself in a room, refusing entry to anyone, even if they're simply there to help him. Huaisang can be pretty whiny, especially if he's being made to do something he has absolutely no interest in or has to do any sort of hard physical work. He's pretty lazy, generally speaking, applying himself only to things he wants to and pressing him too hard is more likely to spark passive aggressive anger and retaliation than compliance.

Where and how did your character enter the Hedge? After the argument during which Nie Mingjue burns his art collection right in front of him, Huaisang storms off and locks himself in his room, refusing to admit entry to anyone. After a while, he hears a voice beckoning to him outside his window. It lures him out with a promise of freedom so Huaisang sneaks out and follows it into the Hedge.
